Venice Doubles Access Fee for Day-Trip Tourists to Combat Overtourism
As increasing numbers of tourists visit Venice, Italy, city officials have announced a significant change in the entry fee aimed at curbing the effects of overtourism, particularly among day-trippers. The city will officially implement a pilot program established in 2024 that raises the access fee from approximately $5.17 (5 euros) to $10.33 (10 euros) for those who make last-minute bookings within three days of arrival.
New Fee Structure
Starting April 18, 2024, visitors who book their entry at least four days in advance will continue to pay the lower fee of $5.17. However, for those who opt for last-minute plans, the fee will be doubled, reflecting the city’s effort to manage tourist influx on peak days. The fee exclusively applies to the historical center of Venice and does not extend to the smaller islands within the Venetian Lagoon.
An array of exemptions exists for this access fee. Residents, property owners, students, employees, individuals with disabilities, and children under 14 years of age will be granted free entry. Additionally, the fee will be waived for participants attending key events, such as the Venice Boat Show scheduled for May.
Aiming for Sustainable Tourism
Simone Venturini, Venice’s tourism councilor, highlighted the program’s objectives during an appearance at the BIT tourism fair in Milan. He stated, ‘The aim remains the same: create a new system to manage tourist flow and disincentivize day tripper tourism in several periods, in line with the delicate and unique nature of the city, to guarantee the respect that it merits.’ His comments were reported by Metro, an online news platform.
This new access fee is part of broader efforts by local authorities to manage tourist numbers, which particularly surge during peak seasons. Last year, Venice implemented this tourism fee in an attempt to alleviate congestion and promote sustainable travel practices.
Increased Security Measures
In conjunction with the new access fee, city officials have also announced enhanced security measures, including increased screening processes at eight key locations, particularly in the main cruise ship docking areas. This move aims to further manage foot traffic and ensure safety amid the growing number of visitors.

Reactions to the proposed access fee have been diverse, as evidenced by social media commentary from both tourists and residents. Some expressed support for the fee, citing the negative environmental and social impacts of mass tourism. One user remarked, ‘Not a bad idea. I cannot imagine the trash and bodily fluids that many irresponsible tourists leave behind every day.’
Conversely, others were critical, perceiving the initiative as a potential profit-making venture rather than an effective solution to tourist overcrowding.
